1. The Lion King
I always cry when the movie starts. I love The Circle of Life. It was the sequence that made me want to work with movies (not just movies, animated films). There’s something unexplainable that invades me when the music abruptly ends and the title is shown.
2. Beauty and The Beast
The theme song sequence completely mesmerized me when I saw it when I was a kid and then, when I grew up and started animating things my jaw dropped at the complexity of the animation with the camera movements. It was a genius sequence. It deserved all the awards it got.
3. Frozen
Beautifully animated. I love Idina Menzel since Wicked and the scene when she built up her ice castle is so amazing (here my architect side was touched, too). The way she breaks free from what society expects from her and to just be herself is one of those scenes that makes me teary.
4. Coco
I dare you to watch this movie without crying! This is a beautiful animation that shows how Miguel rights his family’s wrongs, but… gosh, it talks about death in such touching way. First there’s a mother and a kid in the other world that made me stop the movie and thing “okay, so mother and child died!” it was a small background detail that felt like I was hit by a truck and then there’s the scene where the old skeleton ‘dies’ because he is completely forgotten… not to mention the song Remember Me.
5. Luca
It is a new movie and even if it’s not at all the best animation in Disney/Pixar’s catalogue, but it is here for a personal reason: the Italian village the story is set is JUST LIKE the village where my ancestors lived before they came to Brazil. It was kind of a shock when I saw it and I felt like hugging the staff for the adorable memories.
And since we’re talking about Disney movies: The Princess and The Frog has a special place in my heart because I worked on it :)
