1. Marie’s Figure Skating
I used to dance ballet when I was around my twelve years old. Unfortunately, it was also a time when I started pulling a little weight and even though I loved dancing, my ballet teacher made sure I would dance in a hidden spot, where no one would see me during the scene.
I was really ashamed of myself then and I didn’t tell anyone about it. Marie is in the that gray area where she really wants to compete, but thinks she’s not good looking enough to win.
In the upcoming books she’ll learn how to value herself, even if in this first one she didn’t.
2. Annabelle’s lack of friends
When I was growing up my mom wouldn’t let me out unless I had an adult to keep an eye on me. I was so uncomfortable with the situations that I gave up visiting friends and developing a deeper connection with people.
Annabelle grew up completely alone, surrounded by adults and finding shelter in the garden and music (you’ll find out in book two where she got the records). Since her friends weren’t ‘real people’ she is a little self-conscious and self-centered at the same time, which makes her think twice before making friends with anyone at Thornwood.
3. Secret Passages!
I’m an introvert and I always dreamed to have a secret passage from my room to the street so I could run away when we had visitors. That’s it.
4. Alchemists!
Let’s say every lady is a little witchy. I got in touch with Crystal Therapy and thought it would be a wonderful idea to have the kids playing with elements and stones thinking they would really work as a something overwhelmingly magical, but eventually they discard the club idea thinking it is just a kids’ game, without knowing that Leigh can actually make magic for real.
5. Marc
Marc is based on a good friend who grew up surrounded by brothers and sisters and never really had a chance to shine like an only child would. Because of it he’s the one with the real perspective of life; unlike the other students he can be very carrying and fatherly, without the golden child complex and fully understanding that the world doesn’t revolve around him.
And since I’m here talking about real life situations I invite you to take a look at my webcomics where I show a bit about my routine with my two sides (Emotion and Logic) while I struggle through work and being a mom.
