Imagine you’re a teen whose best friends are books. You spend the lunch breaks in the school library and one day you come across a book about a boy who goes to a wizard school. Okay, nothing too different about that, except he has a best friend who is a bookworm, with big teeth and bushy hair…
Just. Like. You.
Hermione is worried about her grades and about being on her teachers’ good side.
Just. Like. You
Friendship isn’t her forte at first, but slowly she develops to be a great friend to Harry and I admit that as while I was still young and completely avoiding boys, I shipped H/H for a long while.
I thought it was a big opportunity to show the world that nerdy girls could get the hero, that brains are more important than looks, that it was okay that she wasn’t a quidditch player as long as she was truthful, friendly and brave.
Of course, I fell off my chair and busted my ego on the floor. I got into a one big crisis! So, the nerd girls never get the hero? They must be happy with the sidekick? So, I would need to settle for the boy who spit while speaking because the hot jock was unreachable to girls like me?
I still get a throwback at those times whenever a date on tinder goes wrong.
Growing up I got in touch feminist movements and had great LGBT Community friends who opened my eyes to everyone who was different and needed to have their voices heard. The nerdy girl in me decided to fight for Hermione’s honor.
Hermione is too good for Harry and for Ron.
I created Annabelle to be a girl who is different, who is awkward at friendships and feels like she doesn’t below anywhere, yet. She still needs to find her tribe.
I want to develop her to become someone who would easily quote Cher:
“Mom, I am the rich man.”
